Current concepts review: venous thromboembolic disease in foot and ankle surgery.

چکیده
Venous thromboembolic disease (VTED) can be fatal, particularly in orthopaedic surgical patients.14,15 Clinicians and researchers continue to struggle to define, from a riskbenefit perspective, which subset of foot and ankle patients would benefit from prophylaxis and which treatment is appropriate for a given patient. Efforts have focused on preventing the most common and most dangerous sequelae of VTED: proximal and distal deep venous thrombosis (DVT), post-thrombotic syndrome, pulmonary hypertension, and particularly the potentially fatal pulmonary embolism (PE).55 This current concepts review examines the pertinent literature that identifies the pathophysiology and treatment issues associated with venous thromboembolic disease in foot and ankle surgery.

Current concepts review: heparin-induced thrombocytopenia.
Immune-type (Type II) heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a rare but potentially fatal complication that can result from the use of heparin or its derivatives employed to reduce the risk of venous thromboembolic disease (VTED) after surgery. As such, the onset of HIT creates a therapeutic paradox: VTED prophylaxis that induces systemic thrombosis. Orthopaedic patients often necessitate ch...
متن کاملThromboembolism after foot and ankle surgery. A multicenter study.
Thromboembolic disease presents a potentially fatal complication to patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery. Although the incidence after hip and knee surgery has been studied and documented, its incidence after surgery of the foot and ankle is unknown. For this reason, a prospective multicenter study was undertaken to identify patients with clinically evident thromboembolic disease to evaluate...
متن کاملVenous thromboembolic events following foot and ankle surgery in the English National Health Service.
Diagnostic and operative codes are routinely collected for every patient admitted to hospital in the English NHS. Data on post-operative complications following foot and ankle surgery have not previously been available in large numbers. Data on symptomatic venous thromboembolism events and mortality within 90 days were extracted for patients undergoing fixation of an ankle fracture, first metat...
متن کاملPrevention of thromboembolic disease after non-cemented hip arthroplasty. A multimodal approach.
Thromboembolism following total hip arthroplasty is a common complication that may result in significant morbidity and mortality. Despite this, optimal prophylactic regimen is controversial. We investigated the efficacy of a comprehensive approach encompassing the use of aspirin, intermittent compression devices ('foot pumps'), and early mobilization in a cohort of 200 consecutive patients afte...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Frequency of Risk Factors in Venous Thromboembolic Patients Admitted to Ekbatan and Farshchian Hospitals in Hamadan from 2012 to 2017
Background and Objective: Venous thromboembolism is one of the major causes of mortality worldwide. Various environmental and genetic factors are known as risk factors for this disease. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the frequency of risk factors in patients with venous thromboembolism admitted to Ekbatan and Farshchian hospitals in Hamadan from 2012 to 2017. Materials and Methods:...
